Our Mission
At Carolina Hearing Group, we truly believe that better hearing leads to a better life.
About Us
Carolina Hearing Group was founded by Brad Baldwin, Au.D., with the purpose of providing a unique hearing experience through service, education, and technology. We strive to provide the highest quality and most compassionate service to our patients through the use of technology and education. Carolina Hearing Group merged with Hearing & Sound Services in 2004, and it has become one of the premiere diagnostic audiology and hearing aid service providers in North Carolina.
We want our patients to enjoy wearing their hearing aids and feel good about their purchase. In an effort to provide quality control; accurate fitting; and competitive, fair pricing, we have established a hearing aid program with the highest of standards. We encourage you to research new hearing aid technology and discover what these new instruments have to offer.
Our Story
One day, I was working in our clinic in Albemarle, NC. The company was brand new and I was the only employee. Mr. Smith, a patient I had just fit with new hearing aids three days ago, walked in right before lunch demanding to be seen. Thinking it would be a quick fix (“How do I change the battery?” or “Do I have it in correctly?”), I agreed to see him. I walked out to the waiting room and there was Mr. Smith holding the box that contained his hearing aids. He had an angry look on his face. As we sat down in my office, he threw the box on the desk and demanded a refund. He told me, with a few descriptive words, what he thought of the hearing aids and what he thought of me.
When I tried to ask what he didn’t like about the hearing aids, he just looked away and said they didn’t work. At this point, I started to get the feeling that something else was wrong. I told Mr. Smith that I would refund his money and that I was sorry they didn’t work for him.
As he was standing up to leave, I built up enough courage to ask Mr. Smith if something else was wrong. He started to cry. I then began to listen as he told me how his wife of 50 years had just found out she has terminal cancer. She was going to die. He was so overwhelmed, and he didn’t know what to do. He talked for an hour and I just listened. He cried and I cried. I tried to understand and imagine his pain so I could offer some kind of help or hope, but I couldn’t. So I just listened. After he was finished, he stood up and hugged me, and he said, “Thank you. I really needed someone to talk to.” I told him that he was welcome, that I was sorry about his wife, and that I would send his refund in the mail. He then picked up his box and said, “I don’t want a refund. I need these more than ever. I don’t want to miss a thing my wife has to say anymore.”
That day changed my life.
It also changed Carolina Hearing Group. It created a vision of a company that doesn’t just sell hearing aids or provide the best service. Anyone can say and do that. We’re different because we’re a company that creates RELATIONSHIPS with our patients. We care about them as human beings, not just as customers. It is an amazing feeling to help someone hear better, to see their face when they can communicate with their loved ones or when they can start living their life again. But it is an even more amazing feeling to develop a lifelong relationship with each person we help, to hear about the unique and amazing journey of their life, to learn from their years of experience, to grow and be inspired by their spunk and zeal for life. That is the atmosphere of Carolina Hearing Group.
Mr. Smith is on his second set of hearing aids from Carolina Hearing Group. His wife did pass away a few months later, and he was grateful to be able to hear those last few months.
Close your eyes and imagine going to a place that not only helped you hear better but that also cared about you. Just imagine what that would feel like. Wouldn’t you want your family and your friends going to a place like that? Now open your eyes and look where you are. You are there, Carolina Hearing Group.
